There are hopes that an upgrade to the current CCTV system in Letterkenny town centre will double the number of cameras in the town.
At present, there are approximately six cameras in a number of locations including Market Square, Station Roundabout and Lower Main Street.
However, a number application to be brought before the Department of Justice may see that number increase significantly.
Chairman of Donegal County Council, Cllr Gerry McMonagle said he would like to see additional cameras close to the hospital and out towards St Eunan’s GAA Club.
He also revealed that Gardai in Letterkenny can only view a single screen when connected to the town’s CCTV system.
He said he would like to see a multi-screen system introduced as part of a system update.
“As we have seen from recent times, there are still a number of attacks and assaults happening in Letterkenny.
“We have seen the increased number of CCTV cameras means that Gardai can investigate crimes to a greater degree.
“I would be hopeful that our system can be upgraded and that we can increase the number of cameras,” he said.
However, Councillor McMonagle added that there was no replacing the number of Gardai on the streets.
