A 15-year-old from Moville is to make her RTÉ debut as she cooks for the nation on RTÉ1’s Today Show on Wednesday.
Niamh McDermott, a student at Moville Community College, has become a familiar face at Irish food festivals as an assistant to her dad, chef Brian McDermott.
She and her 13-year-old sister Aoife have already worked alongside some of the top names in Irish cooking including Neven Maguire and Rachel Allen, and Niamh is excited to be making her television debut this week.
“Both my girls enjoy cooking, and RTÉ asked if I could bring one of the girls along to cook live with me and Dáithí Ó Sé on Wednesday’s Today Show,” explained Brian.
“Niamh immediately said she’d love to do it.
“She also turned to me and said, ‘that’s two chefs now in the house Daddy’!”
Niamh’s fellow students at Moville Community College will be watching the broadcast live on Wednesday.
“Both my wife Brenda and I are very proud of the girls,” said Brian, “and I couldn’t be more excited that Niamh is now joining me on the show.
“It’s a privilege to cook regularly on TV, but to have my daughter alongside me will be the ultimate proud experience for me.
“I’m so proud of her, and I just can’t wait to get down there and start cooking!
“I’m always trying to show how cooking is an experience which brings families together, so this is a perfect way to demonstrate this.
“My new cookery book, which will be published in the spring by O’Brien Press, actually includes a selection of recipes from both Niamh and Aoife, so it’s great RTÉ have asked Niamh to cook with me.
“I’ve no idea what Niamh’s going to cook, but she loves to experiment with her own twists on traditional recipes, so I’m sure she’ll have a surprise for me – and the viewers!”
Catch Niamh and Brian McDermott cooking live with Dáithí Ó Sé on the Today Show on RTÉ1 at 4.30pm.
