Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair is auctioning a painting done by Donegal’s own blue-blooded Patsy Dan Rodgers.
The newly refurbished Amharclann reopened earlier this year after being closed for a decade. After falling into disrepair due to economic strains and a severe lack of funding, the Amharclann closed its doors in 2007. Over this period, a massive €850,000 was raised to refurbish the theatre, placing it at the heart of the community once more.
Officially opened by Minister of State Joe McHugh TD in March of this year, a grant of €480,000 was received to help with the refurbishment, along with an ambitious 10-year-long fundraising effort from locals.
One of the fundraising initiatives, which is ongoing, is the sponsorship of a seat for €120. Anyone who sponsors a seat will have their name displayed on the wall of the foyer.
King of Tory Patsy Dan Rodgers had an innovative idea on how to contribute to the fundraising pot by donating one of his paintings. This painting is now on auction on Facebook until the end of October – so act fast!
“These paintings are quite the collector’s item,” Committee member Aodán Ó Cearbhaill told Donegal Daily.
“Since the re-opening, the theatre is back at the heart of community life again offering a venue for entertainment, conventions, social and cultural events, giving audiences the opportunity to enjoy the best local, national and international arts and events in the newly refurbished, wheelchair accessible 290 seater auditorium.
“The theatre itself is kept busy with arts events, concerts, conventions, competitions. And the most recent addition is a cinema screen, so great use is being made of the building.”
All funds go towards the community-run Amharclann.
The Amharclann also has a café called Bialann Ard na gCeapairí for pre-threatre treats!
