GARDAÍ have issued a warning over the latest online scam.
A large number of people in Co Donegal – and in other parts of the country – received texts yesterday afternoon from scammers targeting Bank of Ireland customers.
The text, claiming to be from the bank, told customers that their accounts had been blocked.
They were then directed to a fake site and encouraged to input their details.
The text reads: “Dear customer, your account has been blocked. Please log on to www.365onlineireland.com to follow the unlocking procedure.BankOfIreland.”
The bank’s real website is 365online.com.
A number of Government agencies have blocked access to the fake site as part of security measures.
A Garda spokesman said the text is part of a financial scam and urged customers NOT to use the fake site where customers are urged to give their bank details.
“I am an AIB customer and don’t have a Bank of Ireland account so I knew this was a scam,” said one Letterkenny father of two.
“Unfortunately some people might fall for this and end up having their accounts emptied.”
