Donegal Deputies Pearse Doherty, Pat the Cope Gallagher and Thomas Pringle have welcomed confirmation from the Minister with Special Responsibility for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, that funding has been approved for a detailed Study of flood mitigation works and coastal protection measures at Portnoo.
The announcement, which was made during the first day of the Minister’s official visit to the county this week, will see funding of €76,500 be made available by the OPW for a survey to be compiled into the scheme.
Speaking this evening, the Deputies said they are pleased to have had it confirmed this evening by the Minister that approval has now been given for a survey to be carried out into this project at Portnoo and Dooey Point to go ahead.
“We understand that the OPW has agreed to allocate €76,500 in funding towards a study into flood mitigation works as well as a dedicated coastal protection scheme for the local community here.
“This area has long been identified as being at strategic risk of coastal flooding and erosion, and this project was one which local residents and businesses alike have long been campaigning for.
“This positive announcement will no doubt come as a major source of relief for this community and will hopefully be the first step towards providing them with the necessary safeguards and infrastructure going forward.
“As elected representatives for Donegal, we each look forward to working closely alongside local residents, businesses and community groups here in Portnoo and throughout the region to ensure that this project and others can now be progressed and delivered.”
