Crana College in Buncrana had great craic cracking codes this week as part of Code Week.EU
Code Week.EU is a grass-root movement run by volunteers who promote coding in their countries as Code Week Ambassadors. All code event organisers – schools, teachers, code clubs, libraries, businesses, public authorities – come together and have been adding their events to the codeweek.eumap.
Crana College teacher Thomas Boyle, Darragh Geaney and Niamh Griffin were busy organising Coding events for CodeWeek EU last week and they had some really exciting activities for their 1st Year students.
One of these events took place on Wednesday morning tin the school when students got the chance to build LEGO robots and programme them to compete against one another.
Coding in Crana College has really taken off and the purpose of CodeWeek was to celebrate creating with code and to get more students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).
The attraction of Coding for students is that it is fun, creative and teaches them problem solving as well as critical and analytical thinking skills. Younger students are realising at an early age now that many jobs require people with digital skills including coding.
