Letterkenny’s ongoing traffic issue again took up a large portion of Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the Letterkenny Municipal District.
Independent Councillor Dessie Shiels called on the Council to meet with consultants to determine a strategy for the installation of a traffic lights system for peak times at the Polestar roundabout.
Councillor Shiels said a similar system could be rolled out at other congested areas, such as Mountain Top, Pramerica roundabout, Hospital, Circular Road, Oldtown and Station roundabout.
“The Polestar is a great roundabout for cars being able to get onto it at different entry points, but the roundabout, as it currently operates, is not at its maximum capacity,” he said.
“You don’t see enough cars physically on the roundabout.
“Anyone who can avoid it at peak times considers themselves very lucky. We have got to look at that junction as it is the problem junction. I would like to see more proactiveness here.”
The Council say that traffic counts are ongoing and the matter will be discussed at a workshop next week.
Councillor Liam Blaney said: “I don’t know if traffic jams help funding or whatever, but these motions are put forward and should be investigated,
“We would be as well to close the gates of Letterkenny unless something is done to improve traffic flow.”
