Concern has been expressed over a bridge leading to a football pitch in Kerrykeel which is regularly under the strain of flash flooding.
Councillor Adrian Glackin has asked that the bridge, which leads to Rabb’s Park, the home ground of Kerrykeel 71 Club, be turned into a one-span bridge.
Councillor Glackin, speaking at the monthly Letterkenny Municipal District meeting, explained that four pipes under the bridge get blocked with debris during periods of heavy rainfall.
“The whole pitch was under water in the last flooding,” Councillor Glackin said.
“The force of the water pressure left trees bring brought down and they’re getting blocked down in the bridge.
“Flash flooding is becoming more commonplace. It is about us being proactive, rather than reactive. The sooner we get a reasonable alternative here, it would be very welcome.
“Constituents thanked the Council for sending down stones to build up the bank again. This also affects sheds and property in the area. Houses level with the pitch adjacent to the bridge have been flooded on a number of occasions in the past few years.
“It is amazing how many experts come out after events – we shouldn’t just do these things when something happens.”
Members were told that an application had been previously submitted to OPW, but no funding had been received.
Councillor Liam Blaney added: “There was serious flooding there and the bridge just isn’t capable of taking the flow of water.
“This was raised over three years ago and nothing has been done about it. It shouldn’t be a big job either.”
