Sinn Féin Councillor Noel Jordan has today welcomed the announcement that a number of villages in south Donegal have secured substantial funding approval for local projects as part of the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for 2017.
Cllr Jordan was speaking after having received confirmation that applications submitted under the scheme, which specifically targets rural towns and villages with populations of less than 10,000, have been approved for Mountcharles, Kilcar and Dunkineely.
Cllr Jordan said: “I am absolutely delighted to have had it confirmed today that applications submitted as part of the Towns and Village Renewal Scheme for projects in Mountcharles, Kilcar and Dunkineely have all been approved and have been given the green light.
“This announcement follows the ongoing work which I, together with a number of local groups based in these villages, have been engaged in over recent months as part of efforts to secure financial support through the scheme for local initiatives.
“It’s understood that as part of this latest round of funding, both Mountcharles and Dunkineely will receive funding of some €100,000, while an allocation of €42,000 has been awarded to the village of Kilcar.
“In Mountcharles, this money will be used to enhance the village’s streetscape, while in Dunkineely its funding will go towards the development of a local area plan, and the allocation earmarked for Kilcar will assist it to progress plans for a local Digital Hub in the village.
“A major factor in securing this funding was the fact that these local villages were permitted to have their applications assessed under the Tier 3 category for the scheme, and this had been achieved through ongoing lobbying efforts.
“Naturally, this is a massive success for these villages and I must commend the hard work and dedicated which has been shown by local groups who’ve spearheaded these local initiatives and who have brought these projects to where they are today.”
