This morning a protest took place outside Magherabeg National School in Manorcunningham to highlight the lack of safety measures along the road.
The National School is situated on a National Primary road, with a 100 kmph speed limit.
Cllr Paul Canning told Donegal Daily that parents positioned themselves on the hard shoulders of either side of the road, holding placards saying ‘Slow Down’ in order to bring this to the attention of the County Council and the TII.
“The bylaws have already been passed, and this morning Transport Infrastructure Ireland has promised funding for the placement of electronic speed limit signs at eight national schools in the county, including Magherabeg.
“This will mean the speed limits in the area will be amended to school limits, reducing it to 60 kmph.”
Donegal County Council says that the lights will be fitted within 8 to 10 weeks.
“The ball is in the County Council’s court now. It will take 8 to 10 weeks as the proper procurement and health and safety measures need to be taken. This brings us up to Christmas.
“The parents are meeting this evening to discuss where to take things from here. They had planned a number of protests but they may reverse back now in light of the TII’s approval of funding, so they may wait to see how the results pan out and see the best way forward from there.
“It is very welcome news, and shows that things are going in the right direction.”
