A joint operation between Letterkenny Gardí and Revenue Customs has led to an enormous amount of counterfeit cigarettes and a car to be seized.
Revenue says that the tobacco seized was worth an estimated €4,400, costing the Exchequer €3,575. Over 7,000 cigarettes and 1 kilo of loose tobacco were recovered.
A white Vauxhall Insignia was also seized during the operation.
Revenue Customs have asked people to “keep your eyes and ears open” and to report any possible unlawful or irregular activities.
“If you are suspicious about something, contact customs immediately. Please do not wait for office hours – speedy advice can mean the difference between interception and escape.
“Contact your nearest customs officer by telephoning 1800 295 295.”
With Gardaí promising a prosecution, the smugglers’ plans have “gone up in smoke.”
