“No Cycle” signs will be placed at Ballymacool Row in Letterkenny after an elderly resident was struck by a cyclist travelling on the footpath.
Cyclists mounting the footpath on this road towards Aura Leisure Centre have been a cause of concern for local residents, Councillor Dessie Shiels said at a Letterkenny Municipal District meeting yesterday.
Cllr Shiels said he was approached by an elderly resident who was struck by a bike outside his home.
“It is a legal issue, it is against the law to cycle on the footpath. We should put up signs to stop this,” Cllr Shiels said.
He added that such incidents highlight the need for a cycle lane in the Ballymacool area and the need for ramps to reduce speed of motorists.
“Residents in the area should have some sort of priority, they have been there for decades,” Cllr Shiels said.
It was agreed that the Letterkenny Roads department would erect two No Cycle signs at the location.
