Compensation awarded after unlicensed Rottweiler bites jogger

September 8, 2017

A Ramelton man whose Rottweiler bit a jogger has been ordered to pay €560 in compensation to the injured party.

Scott McBride, Ray, Ramelton, was before Letterkenny District Court charged with having a control of or chain on the dog. McBride was also charged with having no dog licence.

Danny Doogan and Kieran Boyle were jogging on May 19th, 2016 when they were approached by two dogs, one of which bit Mr Doogan.

Garda Costello received a report of the incident and Mr Doogan was attended to at NowDoc.

When the Garda called to McBride, he didn’t deny the charges, but denied the biting.

“He said the dog was over-friendly and it was a scratch caused by it jumping up,” Inspector Barry Doyle told the Court.

The dog was subsequently examined by the dog warden.

McBride (35) had lived in London for the last 27 years and obtained a licence for the dog following the incident.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for McBride, said his client’s dogs ‘escaped through the course of business’.

“This dog could have done more damage than it did,” Mr Gallagher said.

“It could well have been more serious – a lot more serious.”

Judge Paul Kelly ordered that McBride pay €560 in compensation to the victim before December 11 next.
