Irish computer users are being warned to be on the lookout for an Irish Water online scam targeting people for their credit and debit card details.
Internet security firm ESET Ireland warns that a ‘classic scam’ is having a revival and is deceptively convincing with Irish Water graphics.
People are receiving emails asking account users to update their account details.
Clicking on a link in the email leads to a forged log-in page, where the victim first hands over their Irish Water log-in details and is then asked to enter all the details of their credit or debit card.
Users are tricked into handing over personal information before being redirected back to the real Irish Water website.
ESET Ireland recommends users should avoid clicking on any links in such fraudulent emails, as they can lead to counterfeit or infected websites, that can spread malware or cause financial damage.
