This stunning piece of artwork was etched out on Tramore Beach during the Féile Carraig Festival last month.
The sand art is the design of Carrigart carpenter and maintenance company owner John James McGettigan, who brought a meticulous group of people together to bring his art to life.
Measuring 65 metres in diameter, this geometric pattern was created using rope and a rake on Sunday 27th August. It took 15 people three hours to perfect.
It is only with the dramatic drone footage by Lionel Hemmerle of ElevatedAerials.co.uk that we can really appreciate the scale of the art.
JJ McGettigan and his family are well known for their talented beach artistry, but more people got the chance to join in during the Féile Carraig Art & Culture Festival last month.
JJ tells Donegal Daily how this sand art takes a lot of planning: “The process starts on the drawing board to come up with a design that will work on the beach. When the design is perfected on paper then it’s transferred onto the beach at a much larger scale.
“This one was almost 200ft in diameter. The time to do it is planned too as we start the design 1hr before low tide giving us the maximum beach area needed to do it.
“It has to be a perfect day too weatherwise to get the drone footage too. We drew out the design and marked the areas to be shaded and the general public were invited to help rake or colour in the areas. I call it AropeAstickArake design.”
The Féile Carraig festival celebrates local artists and musicians in a weekend jam-packed with events. Now, with this breathtaking video, many more people can celebrate one of the highlights which temporarily amazed people in a beautiful Donegal location.
