A Donegal man who obstructed Gardaí from seizing a car he was driving has been fined.
21-year-old Odhrán Doherty, of The Glebe, Letterkenny, was before Letterkenny District Court this week.
On December 23, 2016, at Lower Main Street, Letterkenny, Garda Kilcoyne observed Doherty at the wheel of a vehicle that had no insurance or tax displayed.
When approached by the Garda, Doherty removed the key from the ignition and put it in his pocket.
“He was asked for the key and he said that he didn’t have to give the key,” Inspector Barry Doyle said.
“It was highlighted that the vehicle was obstructing an estate and he became abusive and argumentative. He told Gardai to shut up.
“He was removed from the car and arrested.”
The court was told that Doherty, a mechanical engineering student, was ‘concerned’ that the vehicle, which belonged to a friend, was going to be siezed.
Subsequent to the incident, third party insurance that covered Doherty to drive the vehicle, but which wasn’t display, was produced.
Doherty was fined €300, to be given to the Pro Social Driving Group.
