An Irishman has died in a tragic swimming accident off the coast of the Netherlands.
The 28-year-old from Kerry was found dead after going missing in the sea near the beach town Egmond aan Zee in northern Holland.
The man, who is a scientist, had been swimming with a group of Irish people on Thursday after attending an international science conference in the Dutch village.
The alarm was raised when the group came out of the water and the man was missing. Emergency services found a body on the shoreline at approx 3.40am on Thursday night, the Irish Times reports. Attempts to resuscitate the man were not successful.
Police in the Netherlands confirmed they are treating the man’s death as an accident. The Department of Foreign Affairs are providing consular assistance to the family.
