Households and businesses affected by the Donegal floods should have their insurance claims independently verified a Government Minister has said.
“Getting your insurance claim independently verified will give people some peace of mind,” said Michael D’Arcy, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for Insurance.
“An independent assessor can add a small cost to the claim and having seen for myself the devastation wrecked by the floodwaters in Donegal, I know that many claims will be quite complex.”
Minister of State D’Arcy visited areas of Inishowen affected by flooding with his Fine Gael colleague, Donegal TD and Government Chief Whip, Joe McHugh.
“An independent loss assessor can be very helpful if the insurance companies aren’t playing ball,” said Minister of State D’Arcy.
“Their knowledge of very specialised areas can be very beneficial to those making complex insurance claims.
“In many cases of flooding secondary damage will only become apparent months after the original flooding.
“A qualified independent assessor can help with all aspects of the claim such as assessing the loss, surveying, costings and settlement negotiations. Engaging with an independent loss assessor is something I strongly encourage those affected to consider,” Minister of State D’Arcy concluded.
