Deep down, maybe Glenswilly knew they’d blown it in Magheragallon, but they didn’t show it as they came out fighting in Towney.
They pushed Kilcar as far as they could for as long as they could, but the champions were sent tumbling off their perch.
Now, for the first time since 2009, the quarter-final draw will not have a number or Glenswilly as a 0-16 to 1-9 loss confirmed their exit. A week ago, they were beaten 1-7 to 0-5 at Gaoth Dobhair and it was that result that had scrawled the writing on the wall.
“I’m disappointed for the players,” Glackin said.
“Championship has always been our thing.
“It wasn’t today that it was lost. You could see at spells there why we’ve won what we’ve won. It was just too little, too late.”
Christopher McMonagle’s goal made a game of it late on. A contest that has 12 yellow cards, two black cards and a red card hardly needed stoking, but McMonagle’s goal certainly brought new life to it, but Glenswilly were unable to summons a big finale.
Glackin said: “I’m just gutted for the players. I’m proud of them. They did give it everything for that jersey and that crest. That was Glenswilly today again – fighting for everything.”
