The annual Donegal Marathon kicked off this morning in Letterkenny.
Participants left the Aura Letterkenny Leisure Centre at 9:20 am, with the route going around Letterkenny Town Centre, out by Glenswilly via Newmills, and ending on the running track of Aura. Participants completed this look twice.
Colum Gaile of the Albertville Harriers won with an impressive time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 14 seconds, followed by Alberto Goosen (3 hours 4 minutes 36 seconds). Brian McBride crossed the finish line five minutes later in 3 hours, 9 minutes, and 45 seconds.
The half marathon also took place this morning, with over 400 half marathon runners and walkers completing the same route once.
The winners of the half marathon were Letterkenny AC’s Ciaran McGonagle (1 hour, 14 minutes 4 seconds), followed by Nanagh Olympic’s Gary Scully two minutes later (1 hour 16 minutes 6 seconds). Letterkenny AC’s Pauric Breslin was third with a time of 1 hour 16 minutes and 19 seconds.
The first woman to cross the finish line of the half marathon was Dundrum woman Maria Mc Cambridge in 1 hour 23 minutes and 12 seconds, followed by Philadelphia women Caroline Deeney-Grant (1 hour 34 minutes 51 seconds) and Shelia Regan (1 hour 37 minutes 59 seconds).
In the wheelchair category, Inishowen AC’s Karl Doherty completed the route in 1 hour, 28 minutes.
The inaugural Kid’s Fun Run 1k also took place this morning, with some of Donegal’s most talented children taking part.
