A search involving the Rescue 118 helicopter and the Mulroy Cliff and Coastguard service took place overnight after reports that a flare was seen over Fanad Head.
The call, which was of a genuine nature, reported that either a flare or shooting star was spotted in the skyline just before midnight.
The Rescue 118 chopper and coastguard services were launched and carried out a full sweep of the area.
However, after 1.30am the search was stood down and the rescue services said they were satisfied the call was a false alarm.
