A man has been shot by Finnish authorities after carrying out multiple stabbings in Turku.
The man stabbed six people at Puutori market square in the south-west area of Turku. At least one person has been killed in the attack, with several others being injured. One of those stabbed was a mother pushing her one-year-old baby in a pram.
Finnish police shot the suspect in the leg and have detained them. The Tarun Sanomat report that Finnish authorities believe that an elderly woman and young boy are also thought to have been involved in the attack.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has released a statement saying that there are no reports of any Irish citizens being injured in the attack, and are urging any Irish in Turku to make contact with loved ones to let them know they’re safe.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said;
“The Department is monitoring developments through the Irish Embassy in Helsinki, which is in close contact with the local emergency services.
“There are no reports of any Irish citizens being affected at this stage.
“Irish citizens in Turku should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities. They are also advised to make contact with family and friends in Ireland to let them know they are safe.
“Anyone with concerns for loved ones in Turku can contact the Department’s consular assistance team on 01 4082000.”
Witness Kent Svensson told CNN that he saw a man wielding a “huge white knife” stabbing people.
“It was really horrible. We were sitting on a terrace just next to the square and this woman just screamed like hell and this guy was standing in front of her with a huge knife just stabbing people. There was blood everywhere.”
Police are continuing their search for other possible assailants in the area.
