The wait is over for Donegal’s 2,285 Leaving Certificate students who will receive their results this morning.
Across the country, 58,543 envelopes are waiting to be opened, with prospective students receiving CAO offers on Monday from 06:00 online. These will also issued by post, e-mail and SMS text.
The class of 2017 are the first year to benefit from eight grading bands; down from the traditional fourteen grade bands.
The old grading system only covered five percentage marks, whereas the new grade parameters cover ten percentage marks. The new grading system is designed to help to reduce the pressure on students at exam time and enable a broader more rounded learning experience and to encourage ambition. Moreover, pupils now receive 37 points for an E grade.
This year, more students have opted for higher level papers, with 3.2% more pupils tackling honours level papers.
There has been a huge increase in the number of students taking higher level mathematics, with one in three students taking the higher level course. More students also sat the chemistry exam this year; 1,300 more than last year. German is also more popular this year, with the language being taken by 4% more students.
Education Minister Richard Bruton says it is a time to celebrate the end of a very important period of their lives, and to recognise the massive contribution of teachers, parents, and friends who helped along the way.
“For the class of 2017 there are more pathways than ever before to help you to achieve your potential. There is a wide range of opportunities in the further education and training sector, including traineeships and apprenticeships, as well as in the third level sector.
“For students who may not have done as well as they might have hoped, take time to consider all the options which are available and can lead you to your chosen career. Whatever your results today – there will be opportunities for you,” said the Minister.
The Union of Students in Ireland have also congratulated everyone receiving their results this morning.
USI President Michael Kerrigan said, “Today is a tense and anxious day for Leaving Certificate students receiving their results. Remember, if you’re happy or disappointed with your results you should still be proud of your achievement of getting past one of the toughest moments of your education.”
USI is calling on students enrolled for next year or incoming first years to start searching for suitable and affordable student accommodation as soon as possible.
“There are a number of useful resources for students coming to college next year who are unsure about what to do next about getting somewhere to live”, Mr Kerrigan said. “The USI and RTB Finance and Accommodation Guide details the rights students have as tenants, and it is particularly useful for students who are renting for the first time. Students should also check out homes.usi.ie if they are finding it tough to find suitable and affordable accommodation during the accommodation rush.”
If you’re going drinking tonight, be sure to line your stomach with a good meal and if you’re having pre-drinks, be sure to drink plenty of water and pace yourself.
Do not leave your drink unattended at any stage, and be sure to have your phone fully juiced up. Never drink and drive and do not accept a lift from someone who has been drinking or is on drugs – before you head out, plan how you will get home.
A helpline has also been launched courtesy of the National Parents’ Council in association with the Irish Independent, eir and supported by the Department of Education & Skills.
