Monreagh Heritage Centre
Celebrating Our Industrial Past on Saturday 26th August
Flax and Linen were major industries in Counties Donegal and Tyrone, and other parts of Ireland, up until the 1950s. With the introduction of synthetic materials such as nylon, the linen industry virtually collapsed. Nowadays, very few people know how flax and linen was produced and processed. With that in mind, we’re hosting a Heritage Afternoon on Saturday 26th August from 2pm to 5pm, with an opportunity to witness a little bit of our industrial past being brought back to life.
Everyone is welcome! Local man, Colm ‘the flax man’ Clarke, who worked at linen as a young lad, will be on hand to pull and ‘stutch’ the flax into linen. Tommy ‘the miller’ will demonstrate how a farmer’s fiddle was made. Maureen will spin the linen into thread. Mary will be in the cottage baking bread over an open fire; the same recipe that was handed down from generations past. Roy will be feeling the heat as he pounds away in the forge.
Local man Thompson Graham will be talking about the local dairies and displaying his huge collection of vintage milk bottles. Mervyn will be turning wood into art and demonstrating his craft. We will also have a collection of classic and vintage vehicles on display on the grounds of the Monreagh Centre During 2016 (from May to September) we filmed the whole process of sowing, pulling and processing flax. We will be showing this short film from 3:00pm to 3:30pm.
From 3:30pm we will be joined by Highland and Country dancers, Ken and Linda, Followed by live bluegrass music. It will be an afternoon of interest to young and old alike.
We hope to see you there and admission is free.
