Donegal TD Joe McHugh has welcomed another tourism accolade for Donegal after the Wild Atlantic Way was named as one of the world’s ultimate road trips.
Travel bible Lonely Planet also named the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland in its new publication ‘Epic Drives of the World’.
“Once again the Wild Atlantic Way, an initiative of a Fine Gael led Government and championed by colleagues Leo Varadkar and Michael Ring, has been recognised by the travel industry,” said Minister McHugh.
“More and more tourists are coming to Ireland and the latest figures have shown another increase on last year.
“In Donegal we are seeing the increasing number of tourists from overseas, particularly from mainland Europe and North America and our tourism industry continues to thrive.
“This week another documentary on Donegal is being filmed for broadcast to millions of viewers in the United States this year.
“I am delighted that the Lonely Planet has recognised the Wild Atlantic Way in its latest publication.
“It follows the National Geographic magazine publication this month with a special edition on Donegal, named by the publication as the Coolest Place to Visit on the Planet.”
Minister McHugh added: “I want to commend all those working so hard in our tourism industry throughout the country.
“I know our own tourism offering in the county from Sliabh Liag to Glenveagh to Malin Head and everywhere in between is really setting us apart and making Ireland and Donegal the number one choice for so many tourists from around the world.”
