A well-known athlete has been hailed a hero after spotting smoke coming from an apartment block.
Council worker Sean McFadden was helping set up temporary traffic lights in Letterkenny when he spotted smoke coming from the apartment complex at Justice Walsh Road.
The well-known endurance athlete immediately contacted the emergency services who rushed to the scene around 7am this morning.
When they arrived at the complex, firemen discovered a multi-charger device had been left plugged in and had caused a huge amount of smoke in the apartment.
It is understood the owner had left the apartment the previous day and that nobody was present in the flat.
Mr McFadden said he is just thankful that he happened to be on the scene and spotted the smoke coming from the window.
“I just happened to see the smoke and thankfully and another worker, Ben Gavigan, were there early to set up some traffic lights.
“I would hate to think what could have happened if smoke passed through the building,” he said.
Mr McFadden said he has learned a valuable lesson from his encounter.
“I often leave my phone charging overnight but I certainly will never do that again.
“I spoke to some firemen and they told me the incident was caused as a result of a multi-charger being left charging on a bed.
“I don’t want to even think about what could have happened if the emergency services hadn’t arrived on time and dealt with it,” he said.
