Influential travel magazine National Geographic Traveller UK has published its much-anticipated special pull-out all about Donegal.
The county and its people are showcased in a rich display across 20 pages to show tourists what makes Donegal so ‘cool’.
Donegal was named as The Coolest Place on the Planet for 2017 by National Geographic Traveller, which is a title that has been much celebrated by tourism officials and the hospitality sector.
This month’s magazine features Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way coastline, roads, culture, hiking routes and historical attractions at their finest. The people in the spotlight are the artisan makers, food producers, and local surfers who make the best of Donegal’s traditions and natural landscape.
“Donegal holds enormous appeal for intrepid travellers,” writes Editor Stephanic Cavagno, “so it was no surprise it took the top spot in our Cool List 2017.”
Writer Zoe McIntyre and photographer Alecsandra Raluca Dragoi explored Donegal in May this year and used their experiences as the basis of the magazine’s content.
The booklet’s cover photo is a striking shot of mountaineer Bren Whelan of Donegal Climbing.
Main attractions pictured throughout are Fanad Lighthouse, Sliabh Liag, Donegal Castle, Errigal, Bundoran beach and Malin Head, plus many more hidden gems.
Zoe McIntyre sang the praises of Donegal’s biggest draws for visitors: “The Wild Atlantic Way and sites set to feature in the next Star Wars film are among its main draws, alongside miles of epic coastline and idyllic trails to explore.
“Bed down in a lighthouse as waves lull you to sleep, step into the county’s quirky past at Glenveagh Castle – replete with tartan upholstery and Japanese gardens – and meet the artisans who draw inspiration from the beguiling landscape,” she wrote.
The author lists top places to eat and rest including Nancy’s Barn in Ballyliffin, Biddy’s O’Barnes at Barnesmore, McGrory’s in Culdaff, Brennan’s Criterion Bar in Bundoran and Leo’s Tavern in Meenaleck.
The Waterfront Hotel Dungloe, Harvey’s Point, Rathmullan House and Fanad Lighthouse all make the list of recommended places to bed down in Donegal.
Through expert guides and thrilling experiences, the magazine makes Donegal a very desirable destination for tourists and will also provide locals with many ideas for exploring the dramatic lands we live in.
The magazine is available as an insert in the National Geographic Traveller September 2017 edition which is on shelves now. For Donegal people and those with links to the county, it’s sure to be a souvenir to treasure.
