A diver who was rescued near Portnablagh on Friday has sadly passed away.
The man has been named as John Alwright, a tourist from Bedfordshire who was part of a diving group visiting the county.
Malin Head Coast Guard were alerted of a diver in difficulty at 1:45pm on Friday afternoon, with Mulroy Bay Coast Guard and the Sligo-based 118 helicopter rushing to his aid. Gardaí were also on the scene.
The diver was unconscious when he was taken from the water, and was promptly airlifted by Rescue 118 to Letterkenny University Hospital from Portnablagh pier, however he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
According to the Irish Independent, Gardaí say that a post-mortem is due to take place tomorrow, and are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
