Cumann na gCurach Gaoth Dobhair will undertake a 15km sponsored row in aid of the Donegal to Galway cancer bus service.
The curachs will depart from Machaire Rabhartaigh pier in Cloich Cheann Fhaola at 2pm, and will make their way Machaire Gathlán pier in Gaoth Dobhair on Monday the 7th of August next.
The Donegal to Galway bus provides a free service for Donegal patients attending University Hospital Galway for cancer treatment.
Since its foundation in 2007 the club has undertaken an annual sponsored row in aid of local charities and has raised thousands of euro for their benefit.
This year they will be accompanied on their row by curachs from Cumann Rámhaíochta Chloich Cheann Fhaola, a neighbouring club. The Cloich Cheann Fhaola clubs participation is greatly appreciated as they are very kindly taking time out from their busy regatta training schedule in order to help raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause.
Eight curachs will participate with a total of 24 rowers and they will be accompanied by local boats on their journey.
A spokesperson for the group says; “This year, having seen the TG4 documentary ‘Turas na hAilse’, we have decided to raise money for the Donegal to Galway cancer bus service.
“We will row from Magheroarty to Magheragallon on the 7th of August which may be a tough journey but please spare a thought for ‘the toughest journey’ that Donegal cancer patients have to endure and donate as much as you can to this wonderful service. Go raibh maith agaibh.”
Donations may be made to any member of Cumann na gCurach, sponsorship cards are available locally and contributions may also be made via Cumann na gCurachs GoFundMe account on their Facebook page. On the day, facilities will be available at Machaire Rabhartaigh pier and Machaire Gathlán pier for people who wish to contribute.
