A long-distance walkway and cycleway on the old Letterkenny to Burtonport railway line is being considered as a future amenity for Donegal.
The west Donegal line has been identified as an achievable project as community groups seek to develop disused railway lines across the county.
Cllr Michael McBride this week asked Donegal County Council if it had identified any funding opportunities from Europe for the project.
Donegal County Council said a recent study found that a long distance greenway into west Donegal that makes use of the railway line would be feasible.
The project will now be subject to negotiations with landowners, appropriate environmental assessments, planning permissions and significant financial investment.
Donegal County Council said the strategy for the future of development of greenways will be published later this year and the study will be taken into account to make preparations to avail of any future funding for greenway development.
