Residents on a number of Letterkenny housing estates were left terrified earlier this evening after a huge explosion on wasteground.
Two fire brigades, Gardai and an ambulance rushed to the Glencar area after a massive explosive sound was heard up to the three miles away.
The ‘explosion’ was caused after vandals set a gas cylinder on fire close to the Killylastin Heights estate.
Debris from the incident landed more than 100 yards from the scene of the fire on a green area at Killylastin Heights.
Detectives removed the debris as an investigation was launched into the incident which took place around 7.30pm.
Local resident Tammy Thompson told Donegal Daily that she honestly thought a bomb at gone off at the rear of her house.
“The noise was incredible – I honestly thought it was a bomb.
‘I was terrified and so were a lot of people around here who didn’t know what had happened initially,” she said.
Gardai, accompanied by fire officers cordoned off the area and sifted through the scene.
Gardai took statements from a number of local people.
Ms Thompson said this is the latest in a long line of such incidents taking place on the wasteground.
“A lot of stuff has been going on around here and something has to be done about it. The council need to install CCTV or something to catch these people before somebody gets seriously hurt,” she added.
