Fianna Fáil has selected Micheál Naughton to succeed the late councillor, Sean McEniff, on Donegal County Council.
The seat was left vacant following the death of hotelier Cllr Sean McEniff in April.
Many thought he would be succeeded by his daughter, former Bundoran town councillor Elizabeth McIntyre.
However, a number of others put their names forward for the vacant seat.
They included Mr Naughton as well as former Ballyshannon town councillor, Billy Grimes and Roger Meehan, a party activist from Dunkineely.
Mr. Naughton said he will work tirelessly for the constituency when he addressed delegates at the Mill Park Hotel in Donegal Town.
A hotel manager and manager of the Donegal Ladies Senior GAA team, he promised to work tirelessly for the party.
The selection convention began with a minute’s silence in tribute to Sean McEniff.
