A man and a woman have been rescued from their car after it slipped into a river near Porthall in Lifford.

The couple’s Kia car entered the water just before the Sully Bridge between Portall and St Johnston before 7pm.

Two young men who were at the scene managed to pull the couple from the car.

The emergency services arrived at the scene and the couple, believed to be from the locality, were rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital.

No other car was involved in the accident.

It is understood the woman is in a serious condition.

Fire tenders and ambulances from both sides of the border, backed up by the Rescue 118 helicopter took part in the rescue.

The road has been blocked off and accident investigators are awaiting the arrival of Garda forensic experts to survey the scene.

Meanwhile, an appeal has been put out for a Golden Retriever dog, which was in the car but managed to escape but ran away.
