Concerns about underage drinking and antisocial behaviour among some young teenagers have been raised following separate incidents at the weekend in Letterkenny.
On Saturday night, a local man observed a group of young males setting fire to takeaway wrappers and throwing them at passers-by at the intersection of Main Street and Oliver Plunkett Road.
“I witnessed something that the Gardaí should be looking at,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous, he said.
“They were kicking every flower from the flower bed at the library. Once they were finished there, they started throwing burning bags of rubbish from a takeaway at people.
“This is happening every week now.”
The man took pictures of the incident on his mobile phone
Earlier on Saturday evening, a woman, who does not wish to be named, was working in the area of the Market Square at around 5.30 when she was alerted by what she described as ‘a lot of screaming’.
“I went out to look at I witness a number of boys and girls, I’d say they were between the ages of 11 and 16, drinking alcohol from cans and throwing themselves in front of cars,” she told Donegal Daily.
“A bystander confronted them and they became very aggressive. They actually offered to fight the bystander.
“The group had about 15 people in it. Some of them couldn’t walk properly and were vomiting around the place.
“Someone was recording the whole thing on a phone and one of the young girls became very aggressive. Someone called the Gardaí and they came out.”
It is believed that one juvenile was arrested.
The woman added: “These were just young teenagers and it’s very worrying to see this in Letterkenny at that hour of a Saturday evening. Someone really should be looking about their welfare.”
