The huge Ultra Cycling Race began yesterday, with participants traveling from all over Ireland, the UK, and Europe to complete the 555km circuit around Donegal’s rugged coastline.
Competitors left Letterkenny yesterday morning and embarked on the route that takes them past Malin head, Mamore Gap, Knockalla, Atlantic Drive, Horn Head, Carrickfinn, Glengesh Pass, Sliabh League and Barnesmore Gap all within 60 hours.
While the solo category is aimed at serious athletes, the team categories are accessible to anyone of any fitness level. The team categories cycle in relay format. The categories are; solo, two person team, four person team, eight person team.
The first solo home was Ronan McLaughlin, the first four man team was Maxi T with a time of 17:04:38, and the first two men home were the Inishowen Wheelers made up of duo Damien Langan and Rory Devlin with a time of 17:54:52.
