Carrickfinn Airport in Donegal has been allocated a grant of €22,500 under a support scheme for regional airports.
The grant will go towards safety and security-related projects at the airports that have been approved by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross T.D.
Leas Cheann Comhairle Pat the Cope Gallagher TD has said the grant will be used to update the Air Traffic Control Navigational Charts at Carrickfinn.
The Donegal Deputy welcomed the funding and outlined Donegal Airport’s plans for further expansion.
“The Airport Management will make an application at a later stage for an extension to the Apron to accommodate a second plane.
“I am delighted that the number of passengers using the Donegal/Dublin service has increased by 20% in the First Quarter of 2017 in comparison to 2016.
“Donegal Airport plays an important role in the Economic life of Donegal using the Donegal / Dublin flights has increased by 20% in the first Quarter of 2017 as compared to 2016.”
The €22,500 grant was part of a €1.94million total which was allocated between airports in Donegal, Ireland West Airport Knock, Waterford and Kerry.
Transport Minister Ross said: “The National Aviation Policy 2015 acknowledges the role played by the regional airports in promoting a level of international connectivity to support the tourism and business sectors in their regions.
“The grant allocations announced today demonstrate the Government’s continuing financial support for safety and security measures at these airports. Further assistance in 2017 under our Programme for these airports, both capital and operational supports, will be announced at a later date.”
