Speculation is rife that a sale is close to being agreed on the €17million Grianan Estate in Burt.
While a spokesman for Savills, who are handling the sale, says that the 2,400 acre property is not sold ‘just yet’, Donegal Daily understands that an ambitious Donegal businessperson is close to acquiring the one-of-a-kind farm.
Pat O’Hagan from the international real estate advisors, Savills, says that there has been a ‘high level’ of interest.
Mr O’Hagan said that a sale had not gone through ‘just yet’.
Given the scale of the property and the sums involved, any announcement could be some time away yet and other prospective bidders are still said to be ‘interested’ in the site.
The Grianan Estate is one of the largest organic farms in Europe. Situated at Speenogue, Burt, it is currently owned by the Donegal Investment Group and the 2,400 acres included a 500-acre lake.
The description says: “What makes this farm different is that it was reclaimed from the sea at the end of the 19th century and subsequently drawn into one estate by a Dr McDonald in the late 1950s.
“A sophisticated drainage system was installed at this time by a specialist Dutch firm. Its operation has been copied by other similarly located farms and works very well. The farm was further developed by two other parties until it came into the hands of the current owners.”
