Donegal’s own World Chowder Champion is going to be welcomed home to Ballyliffin this evening to a grand event.
Inishowen chef Kieran ‘Duey’ Doherty beat off competition from foodies around the planet in Rhode Island last Saturday to be crowned World Seafood Chowder Champion in the Great Chowder Cook-Off.
Kieran, who runs the wonderful Nancy’s Barn in Ballyliffin, is on the road back to Donegal to soak up all the glory of his win.
Kieran and Edel Duey and their Nancy’s Barn team are arriving at the Strand Hotel in Ballyliffin from 7.30pm tonight (Thursday).
The award-winning team’s family and friends are planning a big welcome party to celebrate the achievement and support the team who have brought much attention to the top-quality food in the area.
Everyone is welcome to the event, where refreshments and entertainment will be provided in the Strand Hotel after the homecoming.
The Great Chowder Cook-Off in Rhode Island is the original and longest running event of its kind in the USA. On winning his category, Kieran said it was “One of the proudest moments in my life.”
Kieran trained at Killybegs Catering College before going on to open up his own place in the heart of Inishowen.
And it is from there that himself and his team have gone on to build up one of the biggest reputations in the food world.
Nancy’s Barn have informed their customers that they’re planned a day of celebrations tomorrow, Friday, and will be closed on the day before reopening for the weekend.
They better have plenty of chowder ready for the influx of curious customers!
