Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh is looking forward to a new challenge after being elected as Mayor of Letterkenny Municipal Council.
The Fine Gael representative thanked all his well-wishers last night after what he described as a ‘hectic few weeks’.
Cllr Kavanagh was presented with the chain of office from former Mayor James Pat McDaid yesterday evening in Milford. After retiring from work just a fortnight ago, Kavanagh said he is ready to take on the new job and is prepared to do his best.
“It is a huge honour to be elected Mayor of the area, and I’ll work as hard as I possibly can for the entire area over the next 12 months,” he said.
Cllr Kavanagh has served as a councillor since 2009 and worked as a staff officer in the Information Technology Department in Letterkenny General Hospital.
On June 2nd he retired from his HSE position after 40 years and celebrated his 60th birthday on May 17th. He had a quick holiday to visit his daughter in the USA before returning to Donegal to become Mayor this week.
Cllr Kavanagh sent a sincere thanks on Facebook to all well-wishers who congratulated him on his birthday, retirement and election.
“It’s a new challenge and a big challenge, but I’m looking forward to it, and I’ll do my best. Thanks again for all the good wishes, they are greatly appreciated by me and all the family.”
