Councillor Adrian Glackin has requested an investigation into the possibility of providing toilet facilities at Ballyhiernan Bay and Beach in Fanad.
In his first Letterkenny Municipal District Council meeting since being elected as Sinn Féin’s newest Councillor, Glackin made a call for improved amenities at the Wild Atlantic Way discovery point.
“It’s an area of unsurpassed natural beauty,” Cllr Glackin commented while highlighting the increase in footfall to the beach due to Wild Atlantic Way promotions. There is a “severe lack of local amenities” in the area, he said, as he made the inquiry about toilet and baby changing facilities.
Cllr. Glackin cited the Wild Atlantic Way and Donegal being voted as the Coolest Place on Earth as opportunities that need to be used to the county’s advantage.
“People are now coming to the area and we need to harness these initiatives. Repeat visitors is massive if you want to keep visitors coming to Donegal.
“Now is the time to make the most of it and a provide facilities for people coming to these places.”
The 2.5km long beach on the Fanad Peninsula is popular among surfers and recreational visitors.
The motion was seconded by Sinn Fein Cllr Gerry McMonagle, who said: “What we need is the basic facilities for people who arrive on the beaches, no matter where they are.
“If we are really serious about developing our tourist potential we need to put in place the facilities that are needed,” Cllr McMonagle said.
The matter is set to be examined by the Council and a report is expected at a future meeting.
