Letterkenny Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh was today presented with the official chain of office to become the new Mayor of the Letterkenny Municipal District.
The Fine Gael Councillor just retired a few weeks ago, but has now taken on a new job and stepped into the role of Councillor James Pat McDaid, who held the Mayoral position for the past year.
Cllr Kavanagh was bestowed with the chain of office in the presence of his proud family and friends this evening at the Letterkenny Municipal District AGM in Milford.
Independent Councillor Michael McBride was also named as the new Deputy Mayor of Letterkenny MD.
Cllr Kavanagh recently retired from his post as a staff officer in the Information Technology Department in Letterkenny General Hospital.
The 60-year-old plans to dedicate his time to serving the Council and continuing the work of former Mayor McDaid.
Cllr Kavanagh identified mental health, disability and infrastructure as key areas that he plans to work on in the year to come.
Jimmy is married to Roisin (nee McConnell) and has two daughters Michelle and Leah. He has a strong background in Letterkenny as a former St. Eunan’s College and Letterkenny IT student.
Cllr Kavanagh was first elected to Letterkenny Town Council in June 2009. He has been a member of the Donegal Council representing the Letterkenny/Milford area since May 2014 after town councils were abolished. He is the only Fine Gael member of the current council group.
