Irish Water has now applied for planning permission to upgrade the Westbrook wastewater pumping station in Buncrana and to construct a new stormwater storage tank.
Inishowen Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has welcomed the news.
Senator Mac Lochlainn has repeatedly raised the concerns of local residents and anglers with Irish Water about sewerage spillage into the Crana River and these works are intended to prevent these occurrences in future.
Senator Mac Lochlainn said “I would like to commend the local residents and anglers who have raised their concerns about these ongoing sewerage spillages into the Crana river. This river is an important community and tourism amenity and these spillages are just unacceptable.
“I have repeatedly raised and supported their concerns with Irish Water and called for these upgrade and improvement works.
“Irish Water had confirmed with me that the works would proceed a while back and I welcome news that they have now applied to Donegal County Council for planning permission.
“I trust that their planning application will be successful and that these works will be carried out as soon as possible”.
