A total of €19 Million has been sanctioned for the Letterkenny Regional Water Scheme.
The news has been welcomed by Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher.
The announcement will involve the construction of new water treatment plants, renewal of pipe networks and when complete it will directly benefit over 40,000 residents.
Deputy Gallagher said “This is welcome news as it will bring the standards of water to these areas to the highest standards and supply the areas directly affected with a top class supply of water with ample pressure to meet future demands.”
The project will involve pipe interconnectors around 25 km of pipework with the Pollan (Iiiies), Cranford’s WSS and Milford and by carrying out these works it will increase the resilience and overall capacity of the whole regions water supply.
The scheme will also include Cresslough water treatment plant. The contract for construction has already been signed by Irish water and Glan Agua has been appointed to carry out the works.
Pat the Cope stated that these works when complete will be an immense benefit to the overall region from Cresslough to Letterkenny.
He added “The fact it will benefit over 40,000 people directly makes it one of the more larger schemes undertaken by Irish water in the region since their establishment, and the improvements will leave a water supply and scheme which will benefit the residents for future generations.
“This is an extremely necessary project as it will allow for future expansion of demand in these affected areas, as it will also deal with the current poor supply of water in the areas – thus eliminating the numerous problems which these areas have experienced over the past number of years with inadequate or poor water supply. I wish to compliment the Irish Water team who have brought this project forward and secured the funding in order to deliver the project – it is expected the entire scheme will be complete by 20 months which is welcome news.”
