Sinn Féin Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh has this week welcomed confirmation received from Donegal County Council that a resolution to address reoccurring flooding on the carriageway and access routes between both Lunnaigh School and Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair is currently being actively considered, with plans likely to progress to development stage shortly.
The announcement comes following on-going calls made by Cllr Ó Fearraigh over recent months for the issue of excess surface water at the site to be remedied. It’s understood that further technical examinations of the area are now required before remedial measures are drawn up.
Welcoming the announcement, Cllr Ó Fearraigh said:
“Over recent months, I have received concerns from many local residents and also road users in relation to the on-going issue of flooding and excess surface water along the road way between both Lunnaigh school and Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair.
“Following on from those, I have made repeated calls on the local authority to outline how it intends to relieve the problem as it’s clear that a long term solution is required to ensure the safety of road users, school goers as well as to enhance the visual look of this section of road.
“This week I’ve now received correspondence from the Local authority that the location in question has been examined by the council, and I’ve been advised that more recent developments in the area, such as the installation of kerbing, appear to be the likely cause of the water gathering on the route.
“Engineers have stated that additional inspections are now required at the site, and that the appropriate solution shall then be developed to address the problem.
“While this is of course a very welcome step forward, the next obstacle to overcome is to secure the requisite funding which will be needed in order to implement whatever measures are eventually proposed.
“The local authority has advised that its office will keep me updated on any and all progress in this regard, including details of the actions which shall be taken to further progress these works.
“In the interim, I shall continue to work closely with both the council, local residents and all other stakeholders to ensure that this issue remains on the agenda.”
