Seamus Coleman will become a Freeman of Donegal today at a function in the County House in Lifford.
The Everton and Republic of Ireland footballer is recovering from a double leg break, sustained while playing for Ireland against Wales in a World Cup qualifier in March, but will today receive the highest possible honour in this county.
Coleman – who recently signed a new five-year deal with Everton – will become only the ninth recipient of the Freedom of Donegal.
The 28-year-old signed for Everton from Sligo Rovers in January 2010. He has scored 24 goals in 247 games for Everton and has one goal in 43 appearances for his country.
In 2016, he scored his first Irish goal in the 1-0 win over Georgia in Dublin.
The Mayor of Donegal, Councillor Terence Slowey, will bestow the Freedom of Donegal to Coleman today in Lifford, where family and friends will join with Donegal’s elected representatives in honouring the
Last year, former Donegal All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Molloy was given the Freedom of Donegal.
Other recipients were Daniel O’Donnell, Patsy McGonagle, Packie Bonner, the 28th Infantry Batallion, Shay Given, Phil Coulter and the Brennan family of Clannad.
