THE Department of Social Protection has agreed to review benefits for seasonal workers including those who work in the local fishing industry.
The decision follows a meeting between Killybegs workers’ representatives, Minister Joe McHugh and Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar in Gaoth Dobhair recently.
“I have been lobbying on this issue for some time,” said McHugh.
“When Minister Varadkar was in Donegal recently I organised a meeting with fishing industry representatives from Killybegs to discuss their Jobseeker’s Benefit entitlements which have been affected by the shortened fishing season.
“A report on benefits will now include a new chapter examining the possibility of extending the duration of Jobseeker’s Benefit for seasonal and part-time workers.
“This is a step forward and I’m pleased this aspect of social protection is now included in the Department review.
“In relation to fishermen the shortened fishing season can mean some workers in the industry are unable to accumulate the contributions required for Jobseeker’s Benefit, meaning they can only access Jobseeker’s Allowance.
“The decision to dedicate a new chapter on this area in the social welfare review will be welcomed by fishermen in Donegal and throughout the country.”
Minister McHugh added: “I will continue to lobby in Government on behalf of these seasonal and part-time workers.”
Among those who took part in the delegation to meet Minister Varadkar was Manus Boyle.
“It was a very positive meeting and both Minister McHugh and Minister Varadkar agreed there needed to be a review,” said Manus Boyle.
“I am pleased Minister Varadkar has followed up so quickly on our concerns. While no decision has been made yet this is a positive step forward and a step in the right direction.”
