Minister Joe McHugh has welcomed funding for three more Donegal piers in Glengad, Port Inver and Owey Island.

Altogether the piers received funding worth €102,000 from the Department of the Marine. “The funding will help Donegal County Council in the repair and development of fishery and aquaculture-linked marine harbours,” said McHugh.

€30,000 will go towards the reconstruction of the quay wall in Glengad while Port Inver will receive €27,000 for the reconstruction of the pier head and to purchase new steps and ladders for the quay.

Finally, The Scailpnaloing pier on Owey Island will receive €45,000 for reconstruction and the provision of steps and railings.

“I want to thank Minister Michael Creed for extending the programme and securing this additional funding.” said McHugh.

Alongside this Minister Creed has already announced an additional €291,000 worth of funding for Donegal  in April for the following locations:

  • Malinmore – €60,000 for reconstruction of pier at berthing side, providing new decking with steps, ladder and safety railing
  • Downings – €56,250 – repair to pier wall at seaward side
  • Greencastle – €112,500 – reinforce existing piles by wielding steel plates to piles
  • Bruckless – €18,000 – provision of a Port Hand Marker and light on pier to aid navigation
  • Portmore, Malin Head – €45,000 – Replace old crane with new hydraulic pier crane
