Councillor Niamh Kennedy has called on Donegal County Council to provide non-denominational graveyards in each constituency of Donegal.
Kennedy requested the new graveyards after being informed that most of the graveyards in the county were controlled by churches and that county funding was limited to upkeep those held by the church.
“The council have a budget, a small budget to look after old graveyards that are in use and to finish off, but it’s time now to look at purchasing council owned graveyards within the county.
Kennedy said that the increase demand for non denominational graveyard was due to the increase of other religions in the county and the decrease in Catholicism in Ireland.
This issue will be discussed again at a future council meeting.
