Donegal’s newest County Councillor, Adrian Glackin, says it was a ‘proud, nervous and exciting day’ as the Glenswilly man was officially co-opted to fill the vacant Sinn Féin seat on the Council.
The 36-year-old replaces Mick Quinn, who stepped down after eight years as a Councillor last month on health grounds.
Councillor Glackin was joined at the County House in Lifford by his mother, Cissie, his seven brothers and other family members. Sinn Féin Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn was also in attendance as Mr Glackin took his seat for the first time.

“Nervous is the first word, but I’m excited and proud,” Councillor Glackin told Donegal Daily.
“I’m looking forward to it. I have a lot to learn but I’ve had plenty of offers of help from other Councillors. It is very overwhelming. There are so many people here today.”
Councillor Glackin paid tribute to his predecessor, saying: “I want to continue Mick’s good work. He was very highly respected. I have a lot to learn, but I’m willing to give it a good go.
“I have massive shoes to fill, but in asking for a tole model I couldn’t have asked for a more fitting person.”
He was proposed by Councillor Gerry McMonagle and seconded by Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher, who said their new member would ‘bring a lot of richness to this county’.
Councillor Glackin is the manager of the Glenswilly senior football team and is a student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, where he studies Applied Computers having worked in Tesco for 20 years from 1996 to 2016.
He said: “Football and pol;tics are my two favourite things to argue about!
“ I’ve always had a massive interest in politics and in Irish history, but I never actively chased up on it.
“I am very honoured to represent Sinn Féin and I look forward to enhancing their working relationships in Donegal.
“I welcome the opportunity to take on this role. I am here to learn as quickly as possible. I have had a lot of experience working with the public and look forward to building on that.”
