A new programme of around €4.5million of works to improve footpaths and street lighting across Donegal is to be rolled out.
Councillor Ciaran Borgan proposed that more ‘discretionary funding’ be made available for such works in each of Donegal’s Municipal Districts.
“Small footpath works or improved lighting can make a huge difference,” Councillor Brogan said.
“The area of roads is being cut, cut, cut. We are only getting 50 per cent of the funding we were getting in 2008.
“This is investing in our local communities in Donegal and it will send out a strong message.”
Council Director of Services John McLaughlin said that a ‘two-to-three-year-plan ‘ will be prepared, to be agreed upon at MD level.
He added: “Some Municipal Districts have been able to fund this work on an ‘ad-hoc basis’, but it is necessary to have a structured approach and a programme of works.”
He noted that a budget of €1.2 to €1.6 million is planned for each of the three years.
